Bio

Lydia Balash (b. 1996, San Antonio, TX.) is an abstract artist based in Beaufort, SC, whose work examines the relationship between color and emotion through textured color field paintings. Her signature mark making infuses each piece with energy, creating subtle movement that enhances the interaction between hue and perception. Through a meditative, layered approach, she builds each painting slowly, allowing patience and repetition to shape the composition—translating feeling into tangible form.

Statement

Color is more than a visual experience—it’s a language, a vessel for emotion, and a reflection of shifting perceptions. Sharing that connection is at the heart of my practice. Each piece is an attempt to capture how color resonates—carrying a memory or holding sentiment.

My process begins with observation—watching deep blues emerge at twilight or noticing the rich contrast of the earth after rainfall. I focus on the moment, mix pigments until the tones reflect what I felt, and begin the slow, deliberate act of layering individual marks. Over days or weeks, I revisit each surface, refining texture and adjusting hues until everything merges into one.

Through my work, I hope to contribute moments of mindfulness and a sense of belonging within the spaces each piece resides.
